POSITION TITLE: Mechanic
FLSA: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
Parts and Labor Specialist
Lead Mechanic
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Month
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED
- Knowledge of and experience in automotive/bus mechanics
- Competency in the use of laptop computers and diagnostic software/equipment
- A valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License with passenger and school bus endorsements and without airbrake restriction (Candidates who do not meet this qualification upon application must be eligible for and willing to pursue licensure.)
- The ability to pass the VDOE bus drivers’ physical examination and requisite drug and alcohol screenings
- A valid Virginia Vehicle Inspector’s License (Candidates who do not meet this qualification upon application must be eligible for and willing to pursue licensure.)
- The physical capacity to perform demanding tasks that include walking, stooping, squatting, standing, and twisting
- The ability to lift 75 lbs. individually
PREFERRED
- ASE certification (preferred)
FOCUS: To maintain the division’s buses, other vehicles, and motorized equipment
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Utilizes laptop computers, related software, and other diagnostic tools to troubleshoot mechanical malfunctions
- Performs preventative maintenance and routine repairs on buses and other school division vehicles including but not limited to changing tires, changing oil, changing plugs, aligning brakes, and executing other minor mechanical repairs
- Executes specialized/heavy mechanical services including but not limited to repairing/rebuilding engines; transmissions; differentials; lighting, braking, and steering systems; or other major components
- Inspects and installs state inspection stickers on all division-owned vehicles.
- Cleans, disinfects, and sanitizes buses and other vehicles as needed
- Performs on-road mechanical services
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Drives bus routes as necessary in emergencies or when other qualified substitutes are unavailable
- Completes other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation, Parts and Labor Specialist, and/or Lead Mechanic
