POSITION TITLE:   Bus Driver                  

  

FLSA:    Non-Exempt

 

REPORTS TO:    Principal/Assistant Principal

                         Director of Transportation

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  10 Months (182 days)      

                                      

SUPERVISES:    Students assigned to Regular and Special Activity Routes

 

QUALIFICATIONS:                                                        

 

REQUIRED

  • A valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus endorsements and without airbrake restriction
  • The ability to pass the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) bus drivers’ physical examination and requisite drug and alcohol screenings
  • An exemplary driving record certifying that the applicant . . .
    • within the preceding five years, has not been convicted of a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquors or drugs, convicted of a charge of refusing to take a blood or breath test, convicted of a felony, or assigned to any alcohol safety action program or driver alcohol rehabilitation program pursuant to § 2-271.1 of the Code of Virginia; and
    • within the preceding 12 months, has not been convicted of two or more moving traffic violations or has not been required to attend a driver improvement clinic by the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles pursuant to § 2-498 of the Code of Virginia.
  • A statement signed by two reputable persons who reside in the school division or in the applicant's community that the person is of good moral character
  • Proof that the applicant is 18 years of age or older

  • First Aid and CPR Certification

FOCUS:

 

To provide safe, efficient, and courteous transportation services to students participating in the Division’s curricular and extracurricular programs

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Obey all traffic laws and adhere to all State and federal laws and regulations governing the transportation of students
  • Maintain student discipline and report disciplinary issues to the proper personnel promptly in accordance with protocols established by building-level administrators
  • Keep the interior and exterior of the bus clean
  • Perform pre-trip inspections and report damaged, broken, and improperly functioning components to the Transportation Department
  • Bring the bus to the Transportation Department for inspection and routine maintenance as scheduled
  • Attend monthly safety meetings and Transportation Department In-Service Training as directed by building-level administrators and the Director of Transportation

 

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Attend work regularly and secure the services of an approved substitute when absent
  • Alter or change routes as instructed by school-level Administrators or the Director of Transportation to assist colleagues who are absent and/or who are unable to drive their assigned routes
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation, building-level administrators, or their designees
